Plastic library cards are gadgets that ate used in book libraries. They are usually owned by a single individual people. They cannot be shared; hence anyone who wishes to access library services in some places must have them as to be able to operate within it.

The plastic gadgets may be issued in some places such as institutions only to foreigners who have been mandated to use the library by the administration of that school. Some other cards especially those used in the public libraries may be given as a sign of membership. The people given these objects are mandated to borrow books for a given period of time, return them and take others.

This method of running these places has been employed considering the many merits associated. The most important is the fact that through it, all the people using this facility can be identified and illegally present people arrested and handled accordingly. This has ensured safety of those publication materials kept there, as well as that of the people found in that place legally. They also provide a very quick way of identifying who should and who should not use the places.

Depending on the modernization standards of the libraries, the gadgets usually are of varying designs. Those wishing to spend a little bit more time and one in preparing them for their clients may use a more complex design. These ones make cards containing the photo, the name and number assigned to an individual. Those that may not like such complex undertakings may just include a number, while other details are stored in the computer.

Much as these gadgets have many advantages, they also have a series of disadvantages attached to them. The level of risk usually depends on the design of those cards. Those containing the photo of the bearer are considered more secure that those only containing the number. Also, when dealing with very large crowds of people, it may get a bit cumbersome for the personnel managing the entry and exit of people from the libraries.

The use of these gadgets is usually recommended because they are very cheap and affordable to almost anyone who wishes to access libraries. Also, for as long as an individual keeps them safe, they can be used for greater things such as acquisition of knowledge necessary for developmental activities. They are also simple and not in any way complex.

When an individual loses the card the procedure of claiming a replacement is just like that of any other important documents. He or she has to begin by reporting to the police who will issue her or him with an affidavit. The person then presents the affidavit to the people concerned with risk management in the institutions and investigations are done. Having verified that the person reporting is really genuine, they are required to fill other forms for applying again.

The use of plastic library cards has been embraced by a number of libraries and has proven effective in safeguarding the property of the libraries.
