I don't think it needs to be said but social networking may just be the most important tool to come out of the last decade. I think that it's immensely important because it isn't just a realm which families and lonely individuals can take advantage of anymore. Even business have climbed onboard and it has become easily the most effective marketing tool anyone can imagine. Knowing the ways that certain figures in Hollywood act, though, does this necessarily mean that celebrities could constantly engage themselves in it?
Let's get something out of the way: when you post on any kind of social networking site, it's a direct reflection of you. When I make casual posts on my Facebook wall, for example, I sometimes throw in a bit of sarcasm but it's not for the sake of being hurtful. I simply show a joking nature in that regard and those who know me understand this as well. However, celebrities are very much like businesses and companies like fishbat can say that each movement made will be a prime indicator.
What if a tragic event occurred in the world and it seemed like the right measure to comment on it? Businesses will find it best to post the most basic message, sending condolences. What isn't the best type of action, you may ask yourself? In my opinion, it's when a plug to a sale is placed into the post because it is seen as disingenuous and it does absolutely nothing to help that brand's image in the eye of the public, from the way I see it.
As far as celebrities are concerned, there are a number of Tweets that have been made that it shocks me when I see them with my own eyes. For example, Kanye West made a Tweet last year, saying that Kim Kardashian, "did not know what a blessing," he was to her. To say the least, it turned me off because it showed such a sign of ego that it's difficult to put into words. What I do know, however, is that it did nothing to help him in the public eye.
There are good and bad ways to make use of social networking, as you can see. There are times where it's done exceptionally well, as companies know the best ways to utilize the tools which come so freely. For them, I have the utmost respect and I believe that the increased amount of business they gain is warranted. However, those in the public eye should not be using such features if they're not going to be smart about it. They have to understand that the power of their words is greater than what they probably think.
